Champion has found that the quickly cooled pumiceous ash deposits contain essentially one kind of self-reversing titanohematite, whereas lava that cooled slowly in the domes at the surface contains a potpourri of differently composed titanohematites.
The Awaiti sandy loam is developed from thin Tarawera tephra on fine pumiceous alluvium, chiefly derived from Kaharoa Ash and is moderately well drained.
