Laboratory evaluation of rapid test kits to detect hepatitis C antibody for use in
predonation screening in emergency settings.
Before adopting DKT program ("pre-DKT era"), organs from any donors were allocated only to SKT, provided that lower
predonation plasma creatinine was normal and eGFR (Cockroft-Gault formula) was higher than 60 ml/min/ 1.73 [m.sup.2], proteinuria was absent or "trace", and anatomy was (echography and/or surgical) permissive.
As part of
predonation screening, a questionnaire was administered to next-of-kin, and they did not recall TB symptoms, prior TB infection, or TB testing for the prospective donor.
Strict donor recruitment process, proper history taking,
predonation counselling, promoting voluntary blood donation, testing for anti-HCV antibodies all reduce the chance of transfusion-transmitted hepatitis.
Even though there is only one physician, trained nurses are available to perform
predonation counselling maintaining privacy and confidentiality.
Accuracy of
predonation Hct sampling affects donor safety, eligibility, and deferral rates.
Predonation selection of the donor is done for the safety of both donor and the recipient.
Subjects who received the once-daily low-dose iron recovered much more quickly toward
predonation hematocrit than did those who did not receive the low-dose iron (time to 80% hemoglobin recovery, 32 days vs.
Within these circumstances, it is difficult to ensure that
predonation test results for "HIV, HBV, HCV, syphilis, and other locally transmitted infections, as applicable" would be generated within 48 hours, or otherwise repeated at donation, as recommended by interim guidance from WHO (http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/135591/1/WHO_ HIS_SDS_2014.8_eng.pdf).
Consequently, restoring the Hb concentration to
predonation concentrations may require an average of 12 - 18 weeks in men, and 14 - 24 weeks or more in women of childbearing age.
Predonation deferrals are typically based on five factors: self-reported exposures, medical evaluation, previous screen results, or historical deferral found in blood center databases (6) and there are 32 risk factors that exclude people from donating blood.
