pinguecula
A benign degenerative tumour of the bulbar conjunctiva that appears as a slightly raised, yellowish-white, oval shaped thickening on either side of the cornea, but usually the nasal side. Histologically, it consists of a deposition of hyaline substance. It becomes more common in elderly people, especially those exposed to high levels of ultraviolet radiation, wind and dust. Although benign, surgical excision may be requested for cosmetic reasons (Fig. P10).
See pterygium.
