Penicillamine has been used in mercury poisoning (one report), in addition to its indication as a chelating agent for copper in the treatment of Wilson's disease.
Elemental analysis, Mossbauer, and EPR spectroscopy confirmed that the structure is similar to that of complex (I), but instead of the
penicillamine thiol ligands two molecules GSH are present [21].
In this case, the measurement of seral or urine copper, in the rats, is not necessary, because the
penicillamine chelates the free copper and so the monitoring test will be not valid [25].
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and
penicillamine (PEN) have been shown to induce apoptosis in multiple types of human cancer cells; however, the molecular mechanism underlying this activity is unclear.
Low-dose methotrexate (5 to 15 mg once weekly) is now being used more often, before therapy with gold salts or
penicillamine, with improvement in symptoms, although the mechanism of action is debatable.
This process of endothelial activation by copper can be reversed using chelating agents like
penicillamine (59), a property that is widely exploited in designing therapeutic regimens (see section below).
Five had been treated with chelation therapy (
penicillamine and/or zinc) for >3 years.

Penicillamine (D-Pen; Cupramine) is an example of a mineral-binding or chelating compound that has been standardized for provocative testing and therapeutic monitoring.
Penicillamine is being used successfully to slow the progression on the sclerodactyly (see Figure 3).
But the 68 year-old Teesside granddad admits he's one of the lucky ones - because his medication,
Penicillamine, has fought off most of the symptoms.
Other Pb-chelating agents [Ca[Na.sub.2]EDTA, citrate,
penicillamine, and 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanol, also known as British AntiLewisite (BAL)] have been shown to increase GI Pb absorption, and in some cases (citrate,
penicillamine, and BAL) this has resulted in an increase in body Pb burden (11).
Through our research, we soon learned that
penicillamine, the medication Justin was taking, was very dangerous.
