any one of a number of diverse enteric bacteria that fail to ferment lactose promptly.

paracolon bacillus

An obsolete term for an enteric pathogen of the (obsolete) genus Bacterium that does not ferment lactose or saccharose, ferments glucose and mannitol, and produces indole, which may be associated with mini-epidemics in closed populations. The term is not used in the working medical parlance.
