osteogenin

bone morphogenetic protein-3

A protein encoded by BMP3 on chromosome 4q21, which belongs to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) superfamily. It negatively regulates bone density, and antagonises osteogenic BMP induction of osteoprogenitor differentitation and ossification.

osteogenin

An extract from bone that has been used experimentally to induce muscle, cartilage and other soft tissue to transform into bone. Osteogenin is a glycoprotein that can transform muscle flaps placed in moulds into cancellous bone matching the exact shape of the mould.

The activity of BMPs was first identified in the 1960s (21), but the proteins responsible for bone induction remained unknown until the purification and sequencing of bovine BMP-3 (osteogenin) and the cloning of human BMP-2 and 4 in the late 1980s (22,23).
DBM contains active proteins such as bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-b), osteogenin, insulin-like growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor, which are mostly regarded as members of the TGF-b superfamily.7 In recent years, several studies have demonstrated the success of DBM for reconstructive maxillofacial surgery, and sinus augmentation is used in various graft sizes and forms.2-4,8-10
Breitbart et al (125) conducted experimental trials with TCP ceramic and osteogenin, an osteoinductive protein as an onlay graft substitute in a rabbit calvarial model.
Next, they treated the muscle with osteogenin and demineralized bone matrix, two substances that promote the growth of bone cells.
In 18 animals, the researchers injected the muscle flap with osteogenin, a naturally occurring protein in bone that scientists believe may play an important role in the development of the fetal skeleton.
