on-call rota system

A work schedule in which junior doctors work a normal day, Monday to Friday, and are “on-call” in rotation for the rest of the 24-hour period and for weekends. On call rotas are appropriate for posts for which the workload is such that the juniors on-call, whether in hospital or at home, are not over-worked during the on-call hours.

Example
If 6 doctors share a rota equally, but locums are employed for leave, it is a 1-in-6 rota without prospective cover.
