minimal tiling path

An ordered list or map that defines the minimal set of overlapping clones needed to provide complete coverage of a chromosome or other extended segment of DNA.

Minimal tiling paths are a way of sequencing a genome when the data management requirements are beyond the computational capacities of the hard- and software being used; they solve the problem by dividing the genome of interest into large insert clones, then assembling the minimal "tiling path" of these clones. Each clone on the tiling path can be sequenced as a separate project, reducing the computing problems to reasonable limits, while avoiding most problems concerned with large-scale duplications.
