the region of the embryonic digestive tube into which the yolk sac opens; ahead of it is the foregut and caudal to it is the hindgut.

In tomography, the appearance of "twisted ribbon" mesentery, which surrounds SMA; collapsed status of intestinal loops; and a SMA image making rotations in successive sections are pathognomonic for midgut volvulus [6].
The appendix, ileum, and ascending colon are all derived from the midgut.
