Equivalence of working memory performance for rats and humans was shown in radial maze procedures such as 17-arm paper-pencil tasks (O'Connor & Glassman, 1993) and in 7-, 13-and 8-arm walkabout mazes (Glassman, Garvey, Elkins, Kasal, & Couillard, 1994; Glasman, Leniek, & Haegerich, 1998).
The results show that it has been possible to assess spatial orientation within locomotor space experimentally by means of tasks that are based on famous Radial Maze and Water Maze procedures. In contrast to previous attempts addressing the investigation of human spatial behaviour, intra-maze and extra-maze cues were completely controlled, and measurements of different types of spatial memory errors, response times and route strategies were recorded automatically.
