rounded protrusions of a red blood cell infected with Plasmodium falciparum, responsible for the adhesion of infected red blood cells to one another and to the endothelium of the blood vessels containing these infected cells; results in capillary blockage responsible for much of the pathology of malignant tertian malaria.
