petrolatum

 [pet″ro-la´tum]
a purified mixture of semisolid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum, used as a base for ointments, protective dressings, and soothing applications to the skin. Called also petroleum jelly.
liquid petrolatum see mineral oil.
