It has been known for four decades that environmental temperature influences the severity of sterility in the fruit fly upon
jumping gene invasion.
These
jumping genes then use nurse cells to produce invasive material (copies of themselves called virus-like particles) that move into a nearby egg and then mobilize into the egg's DNA.
Scientists estimate that
jumping genes or "transposable elements" account for at least 50 percent of the human genome, and retrotransposons are by far the most common type.
