Adenovirus serotype evolution is driven by illegitimate recombination in the hypervariable regions of the hexon protein.
"Homology-facilitated illegitimate recombination" increased the integration of foreign (nonhomologous) DNA at least 105 fold when it was flanked on one side by a piece of DNA homologous to the recipient genome.
