gluteus minimus

The smallest, thinnest and deepest of the three buttock muscles.

Cvitanic and colleagues evaluated the abductor tendons of the hip using five major criteria: tendon discontinuity, tendon elongation, atrophy of the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles, presence of an area of high signal intensity superior to the greater trochanter on T2-weighted images, and presence of an area of high signal lateral to the greater trochanter on T2-weighted images.

It is called 'hip hiking'2 where a weak gluteus medius or gluteus minimus will force the QL in conjunction with tensor fasciae latae to become the compensatory prime movers of hip abduction.
[sup][3] However, the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, adductors, and iliopsoas muscles may act as a deforming force during contraction, thus increasing the stress on the femur without weight-bearing.
There are three of them: gluteus maximus, the gluteus medius, and the gluteus minimus. They attach to back of the pelvis and insert into the greater trochanter;
"In response, the three key muscles that give the buttocks their shape - the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus - become less responsive and generally underactive, leading to poor muscle tone," he said.
