It has studied a range of women's health conditions, including the menopausal transition's impact on sleep, cardiovascular health, and hot
flashes. As part of this exploration, data from SWAN has been used to look at who has hot
flashes and why they last so long for some women.
Previous investigations using the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) database have shown that women with more hot
flashes have an elevated risk for subclinical cardiovascular disease, said Rebecca Thurston, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh.
The subjects' median age was 46 years, 48% were white, 46% were in early or perimenopause, and 26% reported hot
flashes within the past 2 weeks.
The study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) shows that there is an inverse association between body size and hot
flashes among older women.
Flamarique says, "All of a sudden, I connected the dots" He hypothesized that those
flashes included a UV signal that fish detected in shallow waters.

So getting through the hot
flashes and dealing with the increased risk of heart disease and bone and memory loss isn't just academic.
And when researchers surveyed 377 women who regularly used hormone therapy for at least one year before July 1, 2002 and tried to stop taking it between July 2002 and March 2003, they found that about one in four resumed hormone therapy, most because of troublesome symptoms such as hot
flashes. (5)
