The advantage of using extended memory is that it can be addressed directly and thus is much faster than expanded memory. Since 80286, 80386, and 80486 CPUs can directly address any memory location from 0 KB to 16 MB (80286) or 1 GB in 80386 and 80486 CPUs, these machines do not need to rely on paging memory via the EMS 4.0 specification.
The enhancements include an expanded memory management unit that is now capable of managing pages from 1KB to 256MB, improved control of caches and increased co-processor support.
Measuring a mere .08-inches thin and weighing only 3.4-pounds, the Portege 3490CT builds on the award-winning Portege 3000 series platform and adds the new low voltage Mobile Intel Pentium III 700MHz processor, 20 billion byte hard drive and expanded memory. The system is designed to support mainstream business applications, offers up to nine hours of battery life (with optional high capacity battery slice) and allows customers to stay productive anytime, even in limited workspace conditions such as airline seating.
