(1) The anatomical division according to location into pharyngo-oesophageal (Zenker's), mid-oesophageal (tracheobronchial) and distal (epiphrenic) diverticula is the most suitable for radiological reporting.
The persistently increased tone in the distal oesophagus usually produces epiphrenic diverticula.
Epiphrenic and mid-oesophageal diverticula have been reported with numerous manometric abnormalities, namely DOS, nutcracker oesophagus, achalasia and cardiospasm.
Epiphrenic diverticula are usually single, but it is not infrequent to find two or more synchronous diverticula.
