Physiologic
enostosis was present in all bones, and a small focus of histiocytic cells was observed in the skull near the cere.
It may also be referred to as eosinophilic panosteitis ("EoPan" for short), fibrous osteodystrophy, or
enostosis. The cause of this disease is not yet understood.
It should be differentiated from chronic sclerosing, osteomyelitis, condensing osteitis,
enostosis and odontoma.
With CBCT, it is possible to detect anomalies, such as oral cysts, supernumerary teeth,
enostosis, condensing osteitis, dense bone islands, and osteopetrosis.
The differential diagnosis of osteopoikilosis includes: sclerotic bone metastasis (especially from prostate cancer) [21], osteopathia striata, osteoporosis, melorheostosis, tuberous sclerosis, hyperparathyroidism [27, 28], mastocytosis,
enostosis, osteoma [14].
If high uptake is found, it is unlikely
enostosis but rather a more aggressive lesion.
The terms bone island or
enostosis may be used interchangeably to describe the same lesion, namely, a localized area of compact bone within the medullary cavity of a bone.
Bone scan findings are usually normal in patients with OPK, but reveal slightly increased activity similar to the bone island or
enostosis that reflects active osseous remodelling that may be detected, especially in young patients with classic radiographic findings that are consistent with OPK.
* The spectrum of these lesions includes enchondroma, osteochondroma, hemangioma, hemangiopericytoma,
enostosis, osteoid osteoma, fibrous dysplasia, Paget disease, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, aneurysmal bone cyst, eosinophilic granuloma, giant cell tumor, brown tumor, nonossifying fibroma, and chondromyxoid fibroma.
