ego-dystonic homosexuality

a psychological or psychiatric disorder in which a person experiences persistent distress associated with same-sex preference and a strong need to change the behavior or, at least, to alleviate the distress associated with the homosexuality; no longer a DSM-recognized diagnosis; now included under sexual disorder, not otherwise specified.

At one time, the DSM-III had an entry on "ego-dystonic homosexuality," but these words were removed by 1987.
In 1980, DSM-III replaced sexual orientation disturbance with a new category "ego-dystonic homosexuality" (Kirby, 2003).
Psychiatrists had likewise classified homosexuality as a disease if the individual was dissatisfied with his sexual orientation ("ego-dystonic homosexuality"), but not if he was satisfied with it ("ego-syntonic homosexuality").
First, "sexual orientation disturbance" was replaced with "ego-dystonic homosexuality" as a term to diagnose clients persistently distressed by their homosexuality and wishing to have heterosexual relationships.
