It should be noted that these reports of lower extremity DVT in endurance athletes are distinct from the belter understood effort thrombosis of the upper extremity occasionally observed in young athletes (known as Paget-Schroetter syndrome), where repetitive upper arm movements induce microtrauma of the venous intima and thrombus formation in the axillary-subclavian vein (7), (8).
