doctor's educational need

Also found in: Acronyms.

doctor’s educational need

A term for one (of two) part of a formative exercise developed as a means of improving patient care. After the GP has identified a patient’s unmet need (PUN), the GP should address it by shoring up his or her clinical knowledge, non-clinical knowledge, skill or attitude.

Patient's Unmet Needs (PUN) and Doctor's Educational Needs (DEN)
PUN
After each consultation the GP would identify and log when a patient's need was not met.

DEN
By identifying the PUN one can define one’s educational need. This may be a clinical or non-clinical area; it may be a skill, like dealing with ingrowing toe nails.
