Depending on the severity of injury, chronic constriction injury (CCI) results in an ipsilateral injury with
cortical contusion, hemorrhage and blood-brain barrier disruption (Dhillon et al., 1994).
Cavernomas are typically centered in the subcortical regions and extend outwards toward the cortex, which is another key factor in distinguishing this incidental lesion from acute cortical contusion. (17)
Cortical contusions account for approximately 50% of all intra-axial trauma in the pediatric population.
If the dart penetrates the entire skull and possibly the parenchyma, it acts as a sharp object that may be a focus for
cortical contusion and therefore should be removed via small craniectomy.
Simvastatin reduces secondary brain injury caused by
cortical contusion in rats: Possible involvement of TLR4/NF-kappaB pathway.
Investigators have developed numerous animal models of TBI, such as cortical impact injury, fluid percussion injury, weight drop injury, penetrating ballistic-like brain injury, and blast injury.[18] Animal models manifest
cortical contusions in certain temporal and regional patterns and continue to expand the secondary injury cascades up to 1 year after the initial injury.
