territory

any area defended by an animal against members of the same species. During the breeding season breeding territories may be defended, but territoriality may occur outside the breeding season, for example in defending feeding territories. In breeding territories, the male usually defends the area against other males, and territoriality may last all, or only a part of, the breeding season. The term is not to be confused with HOME RANGE.
