collision induced dissociation

Also found in: Acronyms.

collision induced dissociation

A common event in mass spectrometry that follows a collision between an ion and a neutral species, in which part of the ion’s translational energy is converted to internal energy. The internal energy causes dissociation of the ion into smaller ions and may also change its charge.
