Clinistix

 [klin´ĭ-stiks]
trademark for glucose oxidase reagent strips used to test for glucose in urine. The strip is dipped into the urine and positive or negative results are indicated by the color of the strip.

A narrow strip of card impregnated with an enzyme that produces a purple colour when dipped into urine containing sugar. This is a convenient routine screening test for DIABETES.

Marketed as Clinistix by their employer, Miles Laboratories, the test enabled diabetics to conduct convenient at-home testing and ushered in a new era for self-monitoring of blood sugar concentrations.
The accuracy of the visual readings on the Clinistix was enhanced by a homemade color chart that Kohn prepared from commercial paints (18).
He expanded this technology to the dry reagent strips we now call dipsticks with the introduction of CLINISTIX for urine glucose in 1956 and went on to add a range of chemistries to dipsticks.
