The
circumorbital region of the skull is crushed so its bones cannot be identified with certainty.
tesselata E examined for the character, the
circumorbital scale series terminated on each side of the head at the level of the second supraocular sutures and thus were designated incomplete (Table 3).
Rough scales with many small ctenii covering most of body; head, including jaws, completely scaled, scales on cranium between supraoccipital crest and snout minute and unorganized, these scales also cover jaws,
circumorbital area, and region ventral to orbit; preopercle and opercle covered in loosely organized rows of larger scales, posteriorly flanked by accessory scales.
The qualitative scutellation characters examined in all specimens included sizes of the postantebrachial scales on the posterior aspect of each forearm and of the mesoptychial scales bordering the edge of the gular fold, anterior extent of the
circumorbital scale series on both sides of the head, and number of parietal scales on the posterior aspect of the head (see Duellman and Zweifel, 1962).
There was bilateral
circumorbital edema and proptosis of both eyes, but vision was intact.
(1997) interpreted a small arcuate plate as a possible
circumorbital tessera in Astraspis desiderata and reconstructed the eye region consisting of four such tesserae forming one ring.
Characters Description Stripes Number of pale dorsal stripes (five-seven) scored at midbody FP Bilateral total of femoral pores on thighs COS Bilateral total of
circumorbital scales as standardized by Wright and Lowe (1967) PSG Bilateral total of para-supraocular granules; all granular scales anterior and lateral to the
circumorbital scale row including those between supraoculars and superciliaries (lateral supraocular granules) SDL Number of subdigital lamellae on the fourth toe of one foot (right chosen unless damaged) GAB Number of granular dorsal scales in a single row around midbody.
At progressively larger sizes they extend to the
circumorbital bones, the lower jaw, the gill cover membrane, and the scales on the sides of the body.
There are 130 granules around midbody, 212 granules from occiput to rump, 48 femoral pores summed, 32 subdigital lamellae on the longest toe of the left pes, 11
circumorbital scales summed, 16 lateral supraocular granules on the left side, 16 enlarged mesoptychial scales, and 4-4 supraocular scales.
COS Sum of
circumorbital scales on both sides of the head as standardized by Wright and Lowe (1967) SOS Supraocular semicircles.
2B) with a SVL of 65 mm; a tail length (TL) of 165 mm; 84 granules around body (GAB); 17/17 femoral pores (FP); 29/30 subdigital lamellae on the fourth pes (SDL); six granules between paravertebral stripes (PVG); 197 granules from occiput to rump (GOR); 29/26 lateral supraocular granules (LSG); 9/9
circumorbital granules (COG); slightly enlarged postantebrachial scales, and enlarged mesoptychial scales.
