Open to the public this Saturday (August 3), the exhibition will feature Irish and international artists exploring
circadian rhythms through reflections on time, the tempo of working life, sleeping patterns, and the impact of modern technologies on biological life.
A team from the University of Guelph posited that the
circadian rhythm may also explain the co-occurrence of heart disease and depression.
"Investigating
circadian rhythms in innate and adaptive immunity is a great tool to generally understand the physiological interplay and time-dependent succession of events in generating immune responses," Scheiermann says.
Also, importantly, the authors noted that the animals'
circadian oscillations were more robust in the fasting group.
A research team studied the
circadian response and blood pressure of female mice that lack PER1 and compared them with a healthy female control group.
LE: What is the
circadian rhythm and how does it affect human health?
"The results show separate effects of the endogenous
circadian system, the behavioral cycle, and
circadian misalignment on insulin sensitivity and ?-cell responsivity with relevance for daily glucose regulation in diurnally active people as well as night-shift workers," the authors write.
The diversity and importance of these processes indicate the relation of
circadian rhythm with our health and disease.
In the Philippines, there is a team called PhilSHIFT, a group comprised of researchers from the University of the Philippines-Manila who have partnered with
circadian and chronotype researchers from the Ludwig Maximillians University Munich Institute of Medical Psychology, to study the chronotypes of Filipino shift workers.
Circadian rhythms in gastropod molluscs, which are a lophotrochozoan clade, were first discovered 50 years ago in Aplysia californica (Kupfermann, 1968; Jacklet, 1972; Block and Lickey, 1973; Lickey et al., 1977).
Dr Laura Lyall, the study's lead author, said the team had found a "robust association" between disruption of
circadian rhythms and mood disorders.
Circadian rhythms are variations in physiology and behaviour that recur every 24 hours, such as the sleep-wake cycle and daily patterns of hormone release.
