The radiographic diagnosis of DE depending on the site of occurrence, includes fibrosarcoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, chondromyxoid fibroma,
central ossifying fibroma, giant cell tumor, monostotic fibrous dysplasia, traumatic bone cyst, and solitary bone cyst.
In spite of confusing terminology, POF is not the peripheral counterpart of the
central ossifying fibroma of the mandible and maxilla, (6) but instead is a reactive gingival lesion known under the generic name of epulis.
(8) A close histogenetic relationship exists between the central cemento-ossifying fibroma and the
central ossifying fibroma. The only difference between the two is that, in cemento-ossifying fibroma, there is cementum formation along with bony trabeculae; this cementum is not seen in ossifying fibroma.
Clinical differential diagnosis included an odontogenic keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma, odontoma, calcifying epithelial odontogenic cyst, benign cementoblastoma, benign osteoblastoma, and
central ossifying fibroma. Routine hematological investigations revealed normal values.
Based on these findings a provisional diagnosis of Lateral periodontal cyst was made and under differential diagnosis Central giant cell granuloma,
central ossifying fibroma, and radicular cyst were considered.
