It has a distinctive and peculiar morphology when compared with other genera of Mutisieae, with its single-flowered
capitula aggregated into compound heads and with each aggregation of one-five heads surrounded by spiny, ovate bracts.
This time, however, Gilbert took the opportunity to speak first, even before the reading of the
capitula. His speech took so much time that the Council postponed its examination until the following day.
Capitulescences corymbose;
capitula pedunculate, homogamous, ligulate; receptacle epaleate; involucre multiseriate.
The number of
capitula produced was higher in Sphagnum originating from Mentor Marsh and Tamarack Bog than in the Sphagnum originating from Singer Lake (Fig.
amaena fully opened at 7 days, after formation of the
capitula. Pollen viability test was assigned as: 46% +- 6.5 three days before the flowers opened, 57% +- 6.2 two days before the flowers opened, 74% +- 5.3 one day before the flowers opened, 86% +- 6 the day of flower fully opened, 78% +- 6 one day after the flowers opened, 64% +- 3 two days after the flowers opened, 50% +- 3.5 three days after the flowers opened, 43% +- 1.8 four days after the flowers opened, 37% +- 2.2 five days after the flowers opened, and 31% +- 1.1 six days after the flowers opened (Figure 4).
Capitula solitary, terminal, peduncle 5-7 mm long, corollas white.
In case of autumn-sown crop, maximum (13) number of bees found engaged in foraging of sunflower
capitula at 1600 h.
The safflower
capitula were manually harvested, selecting only those that had already reached maturation.
In 2005 and 2014 flowering phenology was estimated by tagging 20 randomly chosen plants and counting the number of flowering
capitula over time.
Capitula are located in panicles at the ends of the branches and are with only disk florets.
Potential pinniped remains recorded from AE-14 are constituted by a partial thoracic cage (45 cm long), with seven articulated thoracic vertebrae and articulated double-headed ribs and connected with their respective vertebrae via
capitula and tubercula (Fig.
