cancer phobia, cancerophobia

cancer phobia, cancerophobia

An irrational fear of cancer. Cancer phobia does not prompt rational courses such as regular screening and avoidance of risk factors, but rather compulsively performed rituals such as repeated hand-washing and avoidance of contact with other persons. Minor symptoms are interpreted as signs of cancer and panic attacks may occur. Behaviour therapy is often effective.
