cambium, fascicular cambium

or

lateral meristem

a group of actively dividing cells found in the VASCULAR BUNDLES of roots and stems, whose function is to produce new plant tissue for lateral growth. INTERFASCICULAR CAMBIUM sometimes occurs between vascular bundles. Compare APICAL MERISTEM.
