calcium shock

calcium shock

A manoeuvre used by researchers to drive substances into cells and bacteria, in which the cells of interest are placed in a cell-culture medium with an excess of calcium, causing the cells or bacteria to enlarge and their membranes to become “leaky”, allowing transmembranous passage of large biomolecules—e.g., plasmids.
