buff and turf

Originally an Americanism for a ruse used to bump a patient to another ward by previously “buffing” (i.e., “spinning”) a patient’s history to make the patient’s transfer to the receiving ward or service seem appropriate, or at least not unreasonable. If the patient was properly buffed, “turfing” (transferring) the patient becomes easier.
