bryophyte

any plant of the division Bryophyta, a division containing the liverworts (see HEPATICAE and mosses (Musci). These plants do not possess a vascular system and there is always an ALTERNATION OF GENERATIONS with distinct SPOROPHYTE and GAMETOPHYTE generations.
