A macrocyclic lactone synthesised from palmitic acid by several fungi, which has antiviral activity.
 
Immunology
Brefeldin A inhibits exocytosis and antigen processing for MHC-I-restricted T cell recognition.

Membrane biology
Brefeldin A blocks the movement of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi system. It is used to study protein kinetics.
