bone marrow barrier

A barrier composed of the endothelial lining of the bone marrow sinusoids and adjacent pericytes, which exerts functional control on the cell traffic between the interstitial bone marrow and vascular compartments. The BMB limits the dose of a chemotherapeutic that can be given before irreversible BM toxicity occurs, which may be accompanied by aplastic anaemia and/or pancytopaenia.
