bloodless surgery centre

bloodless surgery centre

A free-standing affiliate of a hospital which offers a range of medical and surgical procedures that eliminate or markedly reduce the use of blood transfusions, especially allogeneic transfusions.

There is no standard formula for the types of services provided by a bloodless surgery centre, but may include cardiac catheterisation (laser and balloon angioplasty, radiofrequency ablation), atherectomy, imaging, haemodynamic evaluation, minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy, lithotripsy, radiosurgery, stereotactic surgery), or other methods (e.g., pulse oximetry) that minimise the loss of blood.
