Any of a group of conditions identified by Emil Kraepelin (1856–1926), who postulated that mood, activity and thought sometimes varied independently during the transition from depression to mania, or vice versa.

Bipolar mixed states
• Depressive mania;
• Inhibited mania;
• Unproductive mania;
• Agitated depression;
• Depression with flight of ideas;
• Manic stupor.
