beta (beta)-lactamase
be·ta (β)-lac·ta·mase
(bā'tă-lak'tă-mās) An enzyme that brings about the hydrolysis of a β-lactam (such as penicillin to penicilloic acid); found in most staphylococcus strains that are naturally resistant to penicillin.
