An obsolete colourimetric test once used to detect heme (haemoglobin, myoglobin and related pigments), which fell into disfavour due in part to benzidine's carcinogenic potential.

After 24 hours, Benzidine test was performed to determine the presence of occult blood in feces (Beg et al,2002).
In all three groups, the absence of haemoglobin in urine (after verification by the benzidine test) was taken as index of recovery.
The presence of a small amount of blood may also be noted by using the Gualac test or the Benzidine test.
