A term of art for a biopsy taken from the ‘bed’ of a surgical excision—e.g. from a wide local excision of a breast cancer to assess residual cancer, from a placental bed to assess histologic changes of placenta previa or of a nail bed to assess depth of extension of a subungual melanoma.
