Controller medications, which reduce airway inflammation, control symptoms, reduce future risks of exacerbations and lung function decline, (1) and are used for regular maintenance treatment, include ICSs (eg,
beclometasone, fluticasone, ciclesonide, mometasone [FIGURE 2]), LABAs (eg, formoterol, salmeterol; often as ICS/LABA combination), leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs; eg, montelukast), theophylline, long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs; eg, tiotropium), and immunomodulators (ie, biologies; anti-IgE [eg, subcutaneous omalizumab for severe allergic asthma] and anti-IL-5 [eg, subcutaneous mepolizumab and benralizumab, intravenous reslizumab for severe eosinophilic asthma] agents).
The search strategy used for PubMed was "inhaled corticosteroids" OR "ICS" OR "budesonide" OR "fluticasone" OR "flunisolide" OR "beclomethasone" OR "
