barotropic system

A weather system in which the temperature is uniform and pressure surfaces are coincident—i.e., without a gradient on a constant pressure surface.

Barotropic systems are generally unfavourable areas for severe thunderstorms. In meteorologic parlance, barotropic systems usually refer to equivalent barotropic systems.
