aromatase hypothesis
aromatase hypothesis
The widely accepted proposition that male sex hormones (androgens) are converted to oestrogens by aromatase enzymes before they can act on certain target cells such as those in the hypothalamus concerned with reproductive functions. In females aromatases convert adrenal androgens to oestrogens in the ovaries, skin and elsewhere.Collins Dictionary of Medicine © Robert M. Youngson 2004, 2005
