(1) A nonspecific term for the molecules comprising the mitotic spindle and astral rays.
(2) Undifferentiated protoplasm (hypothetical).

Neither of the above definitions is in current use; they likely represent light microscopy descriptions of intracellular structures, and have little validity in the current environment.
