arc of contact

An obsolete term for the variable distance on the surface of the eyeball on which the bulbar muscles rest prior to inserting in the external scleral surface behind the cornea.

arc of contact 

That portion of an extraocular muscle which wraps around the surface of the globe prior to the insertion of its tendon into the sclera. The point where the muscle first comes into contact with the globe is called the contact point. The arc of contact continually alters its length as the eye rotates. Syn. contact arc.
