angioid streak

Any of a number of minute interruptions of the elastic tissue of the retina, which appear as peripapillary, grey (in non-white patients) to red-brown (in white patients) linear striations radiating from the optic fundus along stress lines or toward the equator in an abnormal Bruch’s membrane. ½ occur in patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum; ASs also occur in fundi rendered brittle by calcium (tumour-related calcinosis) or heavy metal (e.g., lead), as well as in acromegaly, abetalioproteinaemia, DM, haemochromatosis, haemolytic anaemia, hypercalcinosis, hyperphosphatasia, ITP, myopia, neurofibromatosis, Paget’s disease of bone, senile elastosis, sickle cell anaemia, Sturge-Weber syndrome and tuberous sclerosis.
