unicuspis), and 41 Ichthyomyzon
ammocoetes. The brook lampreys are non-parasitic and do not feed as adults, so most if not all parasitism on fish in this system is due to chestnut lampreys.
No marked difference exists between the frequencies of right and left sides at the individual level (
ammocoetes: 41 to 45 observations each for six specimens, with 134 total right-side down, 125 total left; lancelet adults: 18 to 31 observations each for four individuals, with 42 right and 59 left; Gislen, 1930).

The adults die after having laid some 270 000 eggs, and the newly hatched lamprey, which are called
ammocoetes, feed on detritus in a slow moving part of the river for several years before transforming into the adult lamprey.
