Any of a number of conditions caused by reflux of gastric secretions, on the esophageal mucosa–GERD, and laryngeal mucosa–reflux laryngitis and lungs–'reflux pneumonitis' Diagnosis Postprandial heartburn relieved by antacids, endoscopy–± biopsy, pH monitoring Management-medical Change lifestyle-eg raise head of bed, ↓ bedtime snacks, ↓ fatty foods, smoking cessation, ↓ alcohol, use of antacids or alginic acid; histamine-receptor blockers–eg, cimetidine, ranitidine, omeprazole Management-surgical Nissen fundoplication-widely preferred, Hill gastropexy, Belsey fundoplication.
